Use Your Cyber Smarts To Protect Your Business

30 November 2022

While it’s easy to become complacent at the end of a long, busy year, it’s important that we all stay alert to possible threats. According to Interpol’s African Cyberthreat Assessment Report 2021, “South Africa has the third highest number of cybercrime victims worldwide”, which is a powerful reminder that we must remain vigilant at all times!

So, before we get ready to take a break, let’s recap what we can do to keep our client data and organisation safe from cybercriminals.

Be an effective human firewall
  •   Be sceptical of all emails.
  •   Always be alert when using technology.
  •   Pay attention when reading messages on any of your devices.
  •   Protect your login details and passwords.
  •   Understand that data is valuable and that you need to protect it.
  •   Always think before you act and apply the P.A.U.S.E principle…

P – Phishy content
Ask yourself whether the email is unusual in any way and if it’s the type of email you usually receive.

A – Attachment or hyperlink
Don’t click on links or download files unless you are absolutely sure that the email is legitimate.

U – Urgency
Be wary if the email wants you to act urgently or it’s promising you something that seems too good to be true.

S – Sender and subject line
Always verify the sender’s email address – if it’s hidden, hover over or click on the sender’s address to reveal it.

E – Errors
Poor spelling and grammar are very often an indicator of a phishing email. As is inaccurate information.

Let’s keep working together to keep your business safe!
